How to Vet a Chinese Adult-Toy Manufacturer: A Factory Audit Checklist
Your manufacturer determines your product quality, your margins and your ability to scale. For adult products especially — where body-safety and discretion are non-negotiable — vetting the factory properly before you commit is the single best risk-reduction step a buyer can take. Here is a practical audit checklist.
1. Confirm they are a factory, not a trader
Many "suppliers" are trading companies reselling other factories' goods at a markup. Factory-direct means better pricing, real customization and direct QC. Verify:
- Business license and scope (manufacturing vs. trade).
- Ask for the factory address and request a live video walkthrough.
- Cross-check on B2B platforms and see if they hold the actual molds.
2. Certifications and compliance
Request, per product line:
- CE / RoHS / REACH (EU), FCC (US) for electronics.
- Body-safe material test reports (medical-grade silicone/TPE, phthalate-free).
- UN38.3 + MSDS for lithium batteries.
- Factory-level: ISO 9001 (quality management) and, ideally, BSCI/Sedex (social compliance) if you sell to larger retailers.
Ask for the actual certificates (PDF) and check issue dates and scope.
3. Material traceability
Body-safety is your brand's biggest liability. Confirm:
- Where the silicone/TPE is sourced and its grade.
- Whether they can provide batch-level material certificates.
- That samples have no chemical smell (a strong odor is a major red flag).
4. Quality control & AQL
- Ask about their QC process: incoming material, in-process, and final inspection.
- Agree an AQL standard (e.g., AQL 2.5 for major defects) in writing.
- Reserve the right to a third-party inspection (e.g., before shipment) — reputable factories welcome this.
- Request defect-rate history and their returns/warranty handling.
5. Capacity, lead time & MOQ
- Monthly capacity vs. your projected volume — can they scale with you?
- Realistic lead times for stock vs. customized orders.
- MOQ per SKU and per customization type (logo, box, color).
- How they handle peak-season demand.
6. Samples before bulk
Never skip this. Order pre-production / golden samples that match your exact spec and customization. Approve in writing, and keep a sealed reference sample to check the bulk run against.
7. Communication & IP protection
- Responsiveness and English capability of your contact.
- Willingness to sign an NNN agreement (non-disclosure, non-use, non-circumvention) — essential for OEM.
- Clear written terms on mold/design ownership.
Red flags to walk away from
- Refuses a video tour or third-party inspection.
- Can't produce real certificates, only screenshots.
- Samples smell strongly of chemicals.
- Prices far below everyone else (corners are being cut somewhere).
- Vague or evasive about material grade.
Your pre-order scorecard
Score each supplier on: factory-direct (y/n), certifications complete, material traceable, QC/AQL agreed, capacity fit, sample approved, NNN signed. A supplier that clears all seven is one you can build a brand on.
